A Better E-Commerce Site: Is a Little Lipstick the Trick?

Sometimes, all it takes to boost performance on your e-commerce site is a little tidying up -- snappier pictures and graphics, maybe some new features. Consider, however, that what your site might really need is a full platform makeover.

As e-commerce gets more sophisticated and consumer expectations continue to rise, many retailers are considering prettying up their existing Web sites with improved graphics or new features in order to make them more attractive to consumers. While such enhancements can make your site more appealing in the near term, they won't change the makeup of your online store.

So, is your site better off with a few enhancements, or do you need to fundamentally re-think your approach toward e-commerce based on meeting your key performance indicators for the future?

To adequately answer this conundrum, there's a series of questions that must be answered. When addressing these questions, it's important to be honest with yourself.

On Performance:
Is your site delivering pages at lightning fast speeds and will it scale to meet seasonal peaks in traffic? What is your average site uptime? Does your conversion rate beat the industry average or can you improve your order size by adding deeper merchandising functionality? Are you having high shopping cart abandonment rates? Are you getting a steady level of site traffic from your SEO or is your current platform limiting your customer's ability to find your Web store?

On Cost:
What are all the costs associated with running the site? Are your site maintenance processes efficient or do you need a large staff in order to make frequent changes to your Web store? What are your hardware and software upgrade costs and can they be reduced?

On Growth Strategies:
Have you thought about the strategic nature of your site? Is the current platform limiting your ability to sell internationally? Can you leverage the existing platform to roll out new Web stores quickly? Is there a deeper multi-channel strategy that will make my customer relationships more profitable? Is your site secure? If not, what does it mean to your business if you have a security breach? Does the Web site meet the standards set by your competition?

As you can see there is quite a bit to think about when it comes to your e-commerce site, and the questions above aren't even the half of it. As an online retailer, you need to determine return on investment (ROI) across the business -- customer experience can't be your only benchmark for deciding how to improve the Web site. When starting the evaluation process, first benchmark your site statistics against the industry averages to get a rough idea of your performance. Some industry averages that deserve consideration include the following:

• Site uptime better than 99.88 percent (should be shooting for 99.95 percent or better)
• Sub-second page loads
• Better than a 3 percent conversion rate
• Shopping cart abandonment under 60 percent
• Average order size uplift year over year of 4 percent (excluding price increases)
• Site maintenance cost growing 15 percent year over year

Of the industry averages above only conversion, shopping cart abandonment, and possibly, customer retention numbers can be measured by making incremental visual changes to the site. You will never really know for sure if the improvements were a result of the changes you made unless you A/B test against the old page layouts. What happens if you don't have A/B testing capabilities in your current e-commerce platform?

In the age of sizzle it may be fashionable or easy to make incremental improvements to your e-commerce site that simply look good, but eventually, that lipstick will wear off, once again revealing the limitations that have always been there and holding you back. Just remember that you can't sell if the site is down or your new graphical pages take 20 seconds to load. If that's the case, your site may need more than a light makeover.

If you decide that a new platform is required, consider your overall business strategy and then decide how e-commerce plays a vital role in the big picture. Take a deep look into the ROI that can be generated with a new site including improved sales, faster time to market, and lower total cost of ownership. Lastly, build a timetable to sell the replatforming project internally, select a platform vendor that has the functionality you need and the expertise to help you grow, and set reasonable targets for launching your new sites.

Identifying your favourite website, suggest at least three (3) changes for improvement. None is not an option!!

  1. Hmmmm...I am not sure that I have a favourite website. I have lately visited www.mtv.ca quite frequently as I do not have that channel at home and like to keep up to date on "Jersey Shore" happenings and gossip.
I find it frustrating that the viewing box is so small. I am happy that it has recently increased in size, but it is still kind of small. I know, I know, there's an option for a full-screen viewing method, but sometimes I have other programs running and do not like to have to continually exit the view to check on them. It would be easiest with a half-screen view or something.
As well, I find that the site sometimes sends me in circles. The other day I was trying to watch what was to be an inspirational episode of "I Used To Be Fat", but the site kept bumping me back to different links and episodes that I didn't want to see. And then halfway through I got a message saying that the link had expired and I had to find my spot again! It was wayyyy too frustrating to feel inspired by the weight loss stories that day!
Finally, although I know that they must put commercials in to continue to have sponsors to have money to have a site for me to watch free tv, I find the commercials to be ANNOYING! call me nit-picky, but I just don't like this. As well, I find the site to be rather stimulating with all of its advertising and colourful pictures of people. But again, I'm just being nit-picky. Other than that, the site is peachy keen jelly bean! :)

  2. Like Katelynne I to am on the MTV website quite a bit, and agree with what she has to say.. so instead of copying her I will attempt to do Facebook! I know many people have opinions on facebook and how it has changed throughout the years some for the good and some for the bad. I am not one to put up a fuss about it as long as I can talk to my friends and family it works for me.. so if I was to pick the site apart I hate how busy it is there are things everywhere and if you click on the wrong spot by accident you get sent off to somewhere you don't want to be. Also pictures are nice don't get me wrong but when there only yay big in the chat what is the point!? You look like a blob of whatever color your wearing.. It just looks messy.. and finally it would be nice to get updates from facebook it's self when things are changing including your privacy settings.. a little heads up didn't hurt anybody! It would also be cool if you could personalize your facebook and change the colors and set up of everything!

  3. Haha, I like the ideas that "HappyMeal" says about Facebook, especially the personalization would be epic!!!

Anyways, I visit YouTube.com quite frequently, not only just to watch videos but to listen to music too. I would find that it would be cool to have a section on just music type videos because when I type in a certain song, all I get is the most commonly watched one first and then a whack load of "lyrics" type videos. Maybe just a little tidying up there would help.

Another thing I do quite often on YouTube is search for music insirationalists (spelling?). Basically I look for people that do covers of popular songs. I am a large fan of "Boyce Avenue" which is a group of 3 brothers jamming and singing (professionally recorded with their own equipment) to popular songs. Like the music section mentioned in the previous paragraph, maybe they could do that, or to have sections within a section. Basically ways to narrow down a search.

Another thing that YouTube could do is to allow us (as viewers) to rearrange how we want our YouTube to look like. Yeah, you can change colors and stuff like that but what about having the video on the top of the page and recommendations of videos along the bottom. Something like that.

YouTube has done a great job on trying to make things more personalized (colors, favorite videos, subscribing to groups, etc.)Having "queued" videos help us select what we want to watch next instead of going back and selecting then next video. They incorporated recommendations based on what you have watched or subscribed to.

  4. I’d like to talk about my least favorite website instead: msn. Symatico.ca
I used to have it set up as homepage at first, but got rid of it very fast:
    Reasons:
    1. It takes forever to load because of all the annoying pop-ups, banners and so on
    2. There is a lot of useless information on the site, such as “the 10 worst cars in history”, who cares?
    3. The amount of pictures, videos, polls and links just on the front page alone, is enough to make you head spin; very confusing
I do realize that advertising is important to generate revenue from having an on-line presence, but how much is too much, when people avoiding your site all together?
So what’s my homepage, Google of course, plain simple, fast to load, if want read news I can click on the tab, without having ads attacking my eyes!

  5. My favorite website to visit is www.invisiblechildren.com. I read the stories and the news on it as well and purchase a lot of clothing from this site. The site has changed since it first started a couple of years ago and it has improved a lot. Three things I would change or improve for this site would be:
    1. Clutter—this site is full of information with stories, new, job opportunities, and videos to watch. It can be overwhelming and a bit too much in certain areas on this site.
    2. Lots of words and repetitive—throughout the site it tends to repeat the same ideas and you feel at times that you are reading the same thing over and over. The stories can be very long and is could have the potential to turn people away from this site.
    3. Getting lost—there are a lot of things you can click on and it will take you away from that page and onto another. If it is your first time on the site you can become lost very easily and quickly. It may be hard to find your way back to where you were.
I think this webpage is really informative and I enjoy going on it many times a week.

  6. I have to agree with Katelynne, Happy Meal, and Ian. I have similar frustrations and problems with these sites and seeing how you guys took my favorite websites I’m going to discuss Google. Although Google is the favorite search engine for most of us and the rest of the world, but let’s face it has its flaws. One is being the fact that sometimes it takes a lot of effort to find exactly what you are researching. Sometime it takes multiple attempts before you find what you need. Another flaw is the fact that if I put .ca that means I’m looking for Canadian information, .com is American. Google finds information regardless of .ca or .com. Or it sends you right to American based information regardless. The last flaw that I have with Google is the fact that they have a lot of ‘Google’ pop ups or if accidently click the wrong thing Google is a part of your task bar or search bar. I don’t want that, it causes viruses and my computer to be slow!

  7. One of my favourite websites is Beyondtherack.com it is a shopping club website that sells designer products at a discount price. Three changes they could make:
    1. Make it so that you do not have to be invited to get an account on the site. They should let anyone sign up when they want to. This would probably let them have more people on the site, but then as an account holder there would be more people to compete against for purchases.
    2. The shipping takes too long because when you order it takes them 2-3 weeks to receive your item and then it takes time for them to ship it to you. Sometimes it takes over a month to receive and item you purchased. They could look at their SCM and see if it could be made more efficient.
    3. The fact that they only have the events on for a few days at a time, if you are not on the site everyday you might miss stuff. But this is not good for visitors to the site, but is beneficial to beyond the rack because it does bring people back on a daily basis. I am one of those people that does visit it daily, I actually even bought something today.

  8. I don't really look at websites too often, but one of my favorite that I will check out is Please Mum, for childrens apparel. The main reason why I like this website is that I signed up to be a member and they email me everytime there is a sale or promotion going on. I usually do not purchase the new arrivals from this store, as they are a little pricy, but the clearence items are awesome! (If you can find your childs size)

The three suggestions that I would do to the Please Mum website would be: increasing the age catagories, there are one each for "baby boy" and "baby girl" which the age categorie is 6 months to 4 years old. The website should consider having a "toddler" section with the age of 2-4 years of age.
The second suggestion could be an option to type in your location and see if the store has the size you are looking for, or even say "out of stock" beside the picture that you are interested in. This way you know if you can buy it either off the website or in the store. This option is not on the website.
The last suggestion i would make would be to change the font on thier customer service page. The words are small and hard to read and in a lime green color.

  9. One of my favourite websites is called picnik.com. Picnik is a photo editing website that allows some of their services free of charge. Personally, I pay for a subscription for the website. Having a subscription allows me to use the “premium” features and the website keeps a history of all the photos I have edited. Although I am extremely pleased with this website there are a few things I would like to change:

    1. It would be neat if Picnik had an option that gave step by step instructions about how to make a picture look like one that had been featured on the website. This would allow users to be able to create more professional looking pictures.

    2. Picnik could offer printable photo books that customers could create on the website and have delivered to their home. This would be a cool improvement because it would be an easy one stop place to create and entire scrapbook.

3.Another improvement would be if Picnik added more new premium features. Things like new fonts, formats, and stickers would keep the website up-to-date and exciting.

These are some minor changes that Picnik could make, but overall I’m extremely satisfied with the services provided now!

  10. The website I visit often is textsfromlastnight.com. I enjoy this website because it is not only hilarious, but it makes time pass by. It is made up of real people submitting funny texts that someone has sent them the previous night. Some changes that the website could make for improvement would be:

1.To add more graphics. This website has a lot of information and writing, rather than pictures. Even if the website had more advertising around the home page, it would be less overwhelming with all of the information.

2.To have the updates sent to your phone. It would be cool if every time a new text was submitted to the website, it would send to your phone so you can read it right then. Some people may prefer this as they don’t have access to a computer very often, and others may just prefer to go on the website itself.

3.To add videos. I feel that more people would visit the site if it was possible to view “Videos from Last Night”. This would add more humour to the site and make it more interesting overall.

  11. Although I’m using the same example as Katelynne but I would have to say that one of the websites I visit most is mtv.ca. On this website you can watch any TV show that the channel provides for free. I don’t get MTV at home so my only option is to watch it on the computer. Three things I would change about this website are:

    1) It constantly freezes while you’re watching a show. I do realize that it takes up a lot of memory, but I have used other sites for watching TV shows on that I did not have this problem. This website also will stop the TV show I’m watching and then start from the beginning again which is annoying.

    2) I find that sometimes they take a while to put a TV show up on their website to be able to watch. They want it to be able to air on TV first before their website, but sometimes it takes days for them to upload the show which can be frustrating.

    3) I’m not exactly computer smart but sometimes it takes me a while to find the new episodes. I find that sometimes they put the episode in the wrong spot (eventually I see that it gets fixed later) but it’s annoying when you are trying to find an episode and its somewhere else on the site.

  12. I cannot choose a specific website that is my favorite, however I know of a website that could use a lot of work. The website belongs to Walls Rod and Custom, a performance shop for automobiles. Some of the areas that could use improvement are:
    • Lack of information- the website has a separate page for a product list but that’s all there is, there is no product information about the specific products. This makes the purchasing decision a lot harder and could result loss of sales. To fix this problem the owner could at least have a short description of the products listed, or hyperlinks to the products companies’ website.

    • Website appearance is tacky and unattractive – a performance website should make you fell excited when you are surfing it, not board and squinting to read the content. To solve this problem the owner could add appropriate background music or flashy colors and pictures.

    • Slow loading times – when trying to load the pictures or videos on the website it took a lot of time and sometimes even froze the site. I am not sure how to fix this problem but think it should be addressed somehow, as it will upset the people trying to use the website and possibly turn potential customers away.

  13. The website i chose to tear apart is www.dynamite.ca They are a clothing website that has stores all over canada.
What i think that needs improvement is that the company actually needs to put up a purchasing link. You can view all the clothes and the prices and once you find something you want to buy it but on this website you can't. I think the company would have a high advantage with people buying online as they would have more sales.
    2. It shows that you have to sign up to get special offers like discount cards or presents for your birthday. Why can't they just send that out to anybody? People today dont feel that they have the time to sign up. They just want to look and see what they like. At least i do anyways.
    3. Having a website for a clothing company, i think that they should have a little music playing while looking around. When your shopping in the store there is music playing so why not put music up on the website?

  14. I like to go on Lamebook because they have funny stories and pictures that people send in from their facebook or a friend’s account. I like that they have links on the top for Regretsy and People of Wal-Mart websites.

One change I would make to Lamebook would be to have a category to search for posts based on how people rated them. The posts are organized into categories but some of the posts aren’t funny. So I think it would be better if there was a category where you could search for the most popular or highest rated posts.

The second thing I would change is the number of ads on the side because they are distracting. Especially the ads that move because it’s annoying when you are trying to read the website.

The third thing I don’t like are the colors on the website. They are made to look like facebook with different tones of blue but it is very boring.
