CES 2011

CES 2011: Signs of an IT Resurgence

Today, IT is an essentially global market. Economic hardships and unemployment are certainly still problematic, but difficulties tend to be regionally focused or contained. In essence, while many countries and locales are hurting, others are doing just fine and want new IT toys. That, in turn, provides technology vendors a good deal of room for optimism in 2011.
The recent Consumer Electronic Show (CES) held in Las Vegas garnered the following observations.

First, vendors are increasingly attempting to inextricably link consumer products to business IT. Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) successful pitching of its phenomenally successful iPad as a business device is an example of this trend.

Though the iPad is clearly more appropriate for content consumption than creation, it certainly seemed (as did the iPhone before it) to be the techno-tchotchke of choice among business executives in 2010. I expect part of that success is due to Apple learning some hard, if valuable, lessons from the original iPhone, which you might remember was anything but enterprise-ready.

Second, the PC and notebook market has shifted dramatically toward consumers during the past decade. Though consumers purchased just 29 percent of PCs in 2000, they constitute 66 percent of the PC and notebook market today, according to Mooly Eden, VP and GM of Intel's (Nasdaq: INTC) PC and client group.

Not for Consumers Only

If that's the case, why are vendors still focusing so intently on businesses? Think direct, volume sales. There's nothing like executing tens of thousands of sales outside the traditional retail channel to healthily boost one's bottom line.
During the CES 2011 last week in Vegas there were many emerging consumer products and trends implied for business IT. While the show was chock-a-block with increasingly large/decreasingly costly 3D TVs and sophisticated audio toys, there were numerous products implicitly or explicitly aimed at the business market.
CES attendance was up -- some 14,000 more than last year -- and the crowd had a decidedly more global cast, with some 30,000 (the highest number ever) coming from outside the U.S. and Europe. I think the overall increased attendance suggests that despite lingering economic malaise, the IT industry is either feeling pretty good about its prospects or is doing a great job of pretending to do so.

The growth in CES attendees from across the world offers a reason for this: Today, IT is an essentially global market. Economic hardships and unemployment are certainly still problematic, but difficulties tend to be regionally focused or contained. In essence, while many countries and locales are hurting, others are doing just fine and want new IT toys. That, in turn, provides technology vendors a good deal of room for optimism in 2011.

The Business Side

Some of the highlights at CES 2011 that looks good for business are:
Intel's 2nd generation Core processors - In the course of a year, Intel has boosted overall compute performance by 60-plus percent, substantially enhanced onboard graphics, and improved power efficiency. That's great news for consumers but should also (in combination with Windows 7's success) continue to drive PC, client and notebook upgrades in thousands of organizations.

Maturing computing/media convergence - Intel's new Core processors (along with new chips from AMD (NYSE: AMD), Nvidia (Nasdaq: NVDA) and others) are inspiring terrific new PCs and notebooks from numerous vendors, including Dell (Nasdaq: DELL), HP (NYSE: HPQ) and Lenovo. On the consumer side, the big push seems to be in 3D-enabled products, but improved graphics performance also has implications for many business and product development processes. Expect to see business computers with increasingly sophisticated communications capabilities, too.

In fact, computer-enabled communications were very much in evidence at CES 2011. Two examples: 1) Vidyo, a video conferencing firm, introduced high-def multipoint solution for connecting mobile devices including laptops, iPads and smartphones (both Apple and Android-based) with enterprise room systems, and 2) Skype added group video calling to its new Premium package. The company said the new service is aimed at consumers and businesses alike, and can support up to 10 simultaneous users.
In the same vein, one of the most intriguing briefings I had at CES 2011 was with VoiceAssist, a company that develops speech recognition solutions for telephony. Along with the usual voice command dialing features familiar to most all cellphone owners, VoiceAssist allows users to listen and reply to email and text messages via headset-enabled mobile phones. Additionally, the company recently announced a partnership with Salesforce.com (NYSE: CRM) around Chatter by Voice, a new solution that supports standard VoiceAssist features and also allows clients to use voice to post to Salesforce/Chatter, Facebook and Twitter.

Global Reach

Finally, the increasingly global nature of IT and CES was clearly apparent in numerous market-specific products and solutions featured at the show. These included highly architected "home of the future" installations (which, perhaps not surprisingly, evoked numerous childhood visits to Disneyland and Tomorrowland), created by companies based in China. But the trend is also apparent in technology products, including PCs.

One standout there was HP's new DreamScreen 400, a budget, Linux-based touchscreen PC developed for consumers in India. Designed to be family-friendly, the DreamScreen 400 includes bundled productivity, news, educational and entertainment software and content.

It also offers office and communications applications, allowing users to manage business tasks and processes from home. As our personal and work lives continue to become ever more integrated and interconnected, it is easy to envision HP DreamScreen solutions designed for discrete markets of every sort.

  1. The CES website show that is held in Las Vegas is a way for businesses to have the newest technology advancements and show them off. When attending this show you are able to see different businesses advancements that they are making with their products and what they are coming up with. It is a really cool show that I have always wanted to attend because I would love to see what businesses ideas are before the start hitting the shelves. Also I would like to see different products that will never make the shelf but are a working progress.

  2. The 2011 CES show seemed to prove quite impressive. A new world record of 30,000 of just international attendees were there, along with the top 22 CEO's within the business. The website also states that there were over 140,000 industry experts that attended the show as well. This type of attendence is relevant to the age of technology and the advancements in technology. By having so many people there, with all their different opinions and ideas, this can make way for the "new age" of technology, also by spreading the word out of the new technologies that are available. This is a good thing for businesses who want to expand their technological areas.

The areas of interest for me would be the Entertainment Matters, which is designed for the Hollywood community. CES is trying to be more community based mixed with the evergrowing technology. The other area of interest that peaked my interet was the smart appliancees. These types of technology in the homes of people are innovative and make our lives easier by doing this for us. For example: I would love to have a fridge that has a built in tv/satalite radio into it...as well as the programming options that are available.

  3. CES is the world’s largest consumer technology trade show. Major technology trends are shown including for the first time electric vehicles. Bringing these new technologies together allows for more advancements to happen by looking at what other companies are producing. It allows the industry to get together and share idea’s, and also allows retailers a chance to see what is popular amongst those in attendance.
I would be amazing to get the opportunity to see new technology before it is out in the publics hands, and not only to see it but hear from some of the people who took part in making it. It would be interesting to hear the story behind the product and why it was created. My second area of interest would the the Official CES Party because 1. i’ve never been to Vegas before 2. Your partying with very intelligent people 3. the social contacts you make could open doors and not to ruin point 3. is point 4. it’s an open bar! : )

  4. The show is interesting if you are into gadgets and major technology trends such as a collection of eighty different tablets, wireless 4G LTE, connected TV technologies, smart appliances and for the first time at the CES, electric vehicles. Ford unveiled the company’s first electric car, the Ford Focus Electric. CES 2011 was also named “Greenest Show”, featuring a “Sustainable Planet TechZone”. By offering meetings at CES, attendees collectively avoided more than 960 million miles in business trips that they otherwise would have to take if not for the International CES. As a result of attending CES and consolidating trips, the estimated net savings in travel miles is more than 549 million miles, thereby leaving a smaller carbon foot print in the environment.
My personal interests are tablets, like the Apple iPad and related wireless technology, as well as technology which make future automobiles, safer and “greener”. Both these technologies are the trend of the future, and no one, consumers and business can afford to ignore these trends.
I bought my very first brand new computer, a Commodore 64 (yes I'm that old), at a small scale Computer Exhibition in 1984 and havent been to another show since then. Hopefully I can attend CES 2012 and play with all the gadgets.

  5. From viewing the website it showed that the CES is a world wide techonology show bringing in new technologies that might or might not hit the shelves in stores. This show brings in hundreds of thousands of people that observe different gizmos and gadgets from all over the world. Top executives come to this show to see what people are inventing and how they can get in on the action.
My top interests for this show is that it is held in one of the hottest party spots Las Vegas! it would be sweet to see the new technologies out there and learn what their made for and how you can use them. Also you can go for a few hours and then go party with the intellegent people. My second interest would be the entertainment sector. This is an interest of mine because i want to get into this field for a career in my future!

  6. The CES show sounds really cool, as you can see all the new technology, how much it has advanced, and different types of models. Everyone who goes there gets a chance to see stuff they have never seen before, and realize how fast technology is growing. It gives the viewers an idea of what to buy, as they have many models such as telephones, home theatres, car stuff such as audio/video, vehicle navigation, and vehicle security. This show displays techonology that people may never have seen before, and will look to buy it in the future.

This show was in Las Vegas, a city I would like to see someday. Hopefully next year or two, I will get to see this as I enjoy seeing new technology such as new game consoles, mobile phones, and televisions. My top two areas of interest in this show would be gaming/entertainment products and solutions; and home theatre. I like to play video games on the PS3 or my laptop, and always looking at games, or equipment that can make the experience of gaming better. As for home theatre, I like to watch TV and movies, and seeing technology stuff in this area will be great as I can find information about how to make my own home theatre someday.

  8. The CES show looks like it’d be interesting and exciting to attend! It is a way for businesses to show off their latest technology and advancements. It proves to the public just how much technology is taking over the world and how much we rely on it.

The top two traits about the CES show that interest me the most are the fact that it is held in Las Vegas and the other is that it would be neat to see all of the newest technology! Everyone is always saying how great Las Vegas is and I have never been, so this would give me good reason to go. Also, I think it would be really cool to go to the CES show because I would get to see products that may not even make the shelf.

  9. The 2011 CES show allows companies to display their latest inventions and innovations to the public. I think trade shows are one of the best ways to promote a new product. They expose new products to the media and public as well as gain the interests of lurking investors.

There were two areas that interested me: Solar technology and tablets. I think that solar technology is underrated, and is slowly making its presents in the market place. It is a becoming more and more advanced each year and will eventually take over a lot of the convention power alternatives.

I think tablets are also another product of the future. Apple I Pad was the first to hit the market, and now other companies are in the process of building their own tablets. They are compact and easy to use compared to lap tops and desk mount computers. Although they do not have the storage capacity as a lap top or desk mount, they certainty are more maneuverable and user friendly. What really excites me is the fact that the tablet concept is only a few years old! How much will they advance in the next decade or two! Look back at when the first desk mount or lab top was brought to the market and the changes they made in their first ten years, there was a lot. If this holds true for the tablet concept I think we can expect to see a more advanced tablet in the future.

  10. I'm not a very technological person, but I found the show and website to be interesting. It looks to be a very high-tech show with amazing innovations and poses to be an excellent way to get a name out there, and show off new creations.
I think that it would, of course, be cool to go to Vegas! If I had the time and money I would visit, because this would also be a great way to meet new people and make contacts. I also think that technology such as tablets and iPads are very innovative and changing the world, even including devices such as kindles.

  11. Attending CES would be a very interesting and exciting experience. Being able to see and sample all the newest technology would e really fun. Attending this event would also inspire other creative minds to design even newer products. CES is a great way for inventors and innovators to come together and create new ideas and products.

Being able to attend CES would be an awesome experience! Checking out all the latest technology and understanding how to use the products would be really interesting. It would be really neat to see how advanced our world is becoming. The CES would be a great place to network and really get your ideas out to possible investors and future customers. Also, spending some time in Vegas would be a lot of fun!

Possibly an E-business field trip in the near future??

  12. The CES is a good place to go to learn about new technology and information about products you are interested in. more than 2700 companies go to CES and it is the world’s largest consumer technology tradeshow. The CES is relevant to technology because there are more than 20,000 new consumer products launched every year that generates a lot of buzz and media. The Emmy Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Engineering/ Technical Development are presented at the CES, for the fifth consecutive year. The ten hottest gadgets to watch for are presented every year, picking the most desirable, and innovative products.

My top two areas of interest going to the CES would to see all the gadgets and technology people have created because it would be cool to see what will be the next “it” thing. To see the different awards handed out and who won what for which technology.

  13. I have never heard of the CES show until know and after checking out the website it has proven to be quite the event. The show seems like they are interesting and reveals the newest and most advanced technology. After doing some research I think that anyone who is interesting in seeing the newest and most improved technology should attend the GES shows.

I think that once you visit an event like this you would look at the technology world a little different, creating more of an interest. Technology, like the Ipad, is change the world and once more advances arise the future will be completely different.

  14. I would definatly attend this event if i had the chance (maybe the money too). By the looks of the site, you could enjoy everything that has to do with technology. From everyday use equipment to equipment that you may use occasionally.

The thing that i have found that was kind of neat was that it shows/explains what they are doing for changes for the next time they do the event. For example, there was an article saying that they are expanding the 2012 International CES iLounge Pavilion because it "sold out" in two hours, meanwhile they already have over 50,000 square feet of exhibit space. This truely shows that they are expanding and is becoming very popular.

I like how you are able to set up almost everything for your visit (if you are to go). They have so many services such as shuttle service, hotel and travel, and also has a section for just international visitors. This indicates that they are wanting to expand as much as they can possible.

Technology is definatly around and there is plent more on its way!!!

  15. CES is a great place to learn about new technology and information about products. I am not a techno geek but the site sure nhad some interesting items. It got my interest up.

Tablets are the product of the future. iPad was the first to hit the market and now other companies are building their own tablets. The compact and easy to use featutres make them better than lap tops.In my opinion.

The saying "What happens in Vega stays in Vega", I hope is not true in this case. I would like to be able to use some ong these products as they would make my like easier.

  16. The CES (International Consumer Electronics Show) is held in Las Vegas. It is a tradeshow that shows everyone new products that may or may not have hit shelves yet. The show will tell everyone about the new advancements to electronics and new items that are coming out. This event seems really interesting and it would be cool to attend.

I think it would be really cool to attend this show. There are lots of different ideas that people have with technology and it would be cool to see what they come up with. The event is held in Las Vegas so it would be sweet to go there to see the city as well. There would be lots of people as well as some celebrities at the show and that would be cool to see.
